We are our swim community. Everyone from swim coaches and students to elite athletes has a role to play. There are 6 steps we can take so everyone feels welcome!
So what can be done?
We aren’t the same. Let’s acknowledge that not everyone has the same opportunities or faces the same barriers to joining or progressing in the Australian swimming community. If we don’t see it, we can’t change it.
Whether you’re aware of it or not, we all have biases or beliefs or blindspots that impact our actions. Educating ourselves on the barriers others face helps us to change attitudes and make new choices for the better.
Our words matter. Language has the power to reinforce or deconstruct beliefs that either reinforce discrimination or build equality. It’s never okay to use derogatory language and always right to use pronouns as requested.
If you witness discrimination or disrespectful behaviour, say something. Don’t wait for those affected to respond. The behaviours you walk past are behaviours you accept. Levelling the Deck is about what we stand for.
As we’re all learning more about our differences and how to be inclusive. If someone points out your actions may be perceived as exclusive or offensive, use it as an opportunity for growth. An opportunity to learn.
Our community’s journey to diversity depends on shared understanding. As individuals, our journey requires introspection. Regularly reflect on your progress, learn from your mistakes and keep striving to be better.
